Breaking the Cloud: The Story of Underground Nexus

Breaking the Cloud: The Story of Underground Nexus

Part Two: Nearing 10,000 pulls, and growing faster than ever.

When we set out to build the Underground Nexus, we were building the foundation for an entirely new way to run infrastructure.

Nearly two years of configuration, scripting, and problem-solving went into creating the Nexus as it exists today: a cloud-native, DevSecOps-ready, fully portable platform that doesn’t care what hardware you use or where you’re deploying.

The entire premise is simple: you should be able to own and run your own cloud—without vendor lock-in, without massive overhead, and without relying on tools that weren’t built for you.

And now, we’re seeing that vision resonate with others.

As we close in on 10,000 downloads, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what this milestone means. And how Cloud Underground has evolved to get here.

Who We Are Today

Cloud Underground is still built on the same foundation of engineering-first, DIY resilience that defined our early days, but we’ve grown.

We’re no longer just the builders behind the scenes, selling foundational trainings to our early adopters. We’ve matured into a product-driven, systems-focused company supporting a growing ecosystem of developers, businesses, and security teams. Here’s what that looks like today:

1. We help teams own their infrastructure.

The Underground Nexus allows companies to fully own their cloud-native environments—no licensing traps, no hidden fees, no reliance on third-party platforms to keep things running.

Whether you’re deploying in a hardened datacenter, on a Raspberry Pi, or across multiple enterprise systems, the Nexus offers the portability, isolation, and control you need to build infrastructure your way.

2. We support high-security, high-performance workflows.

Our users include everyone from cybersecurity educators running air-gapped training labs, to application developers deploying QA and staging environments that mirror production systems—without handing sensitive data to a third-party cloud.

With DevSecOps baked in, Underground Nexus is designed to enable secure CI/CD, zero-trust architecture, and custom VDI solutions that run entirely in your own infrastructure.

3. We’re scaling and improving.

We’ve recently brought on a new Sales and Marketing Director, Andrea Bolivar, who’s helping us sharpen how we communicate the value of what we’ve built, and make it easier for new users and enterprise teams to discover and adopt Nexus-based workflows.

Meanwhile, we’re continuing to refine the platform:

  • Improved deployment guides and documentation
  • Streamlined user onboarding
  • Better support for darksite and disconnected environments
  • Smoother updates and maintenance tooling

This work reflects our commitment to staying lean, open, and deeply user-focused, even as we grow.

Help Us Reach 10,000 Pulls

Right now, we’re on the verge of a major milestone: 10,000 downloads of the Underground Nexus.

That number signals that the way we think about infrastructure is changing. It means people are looking for alternatives. They want autonomy. They want to experiment, deploy, and scale on their own terms.

And if you’ve been on the sidelines, this is the moment to jump in.

We’re currently making major updates to the Underground Nexus to improve user experience across the board—streamlining deployment, simplifying onboarding, and enhancing reliability in both connected and air-gapped environments.

If you’ve already deployed a Nexus, now is a great time to update and get the latest improvements. If you haven’t tried it yet, this is the perfect time to start.

Every pull gets us one step closer to proving that cloud-native infrastructure doesn’t have to come with strings attached.

Coming Next: The Future We’re Building

In the final part of this series, we’ll share what’s coming next for Cloud Underground and how we’re continuing to build toward a future where anyone can deploy, own, and scale infrastructure that works for them.
